Now that Ronda Rousey has successfully defended her title against Sara McMann, the question always turns to what’s next? Number one contender Cat Zingano has been next for quite some time. Maybe her time will finally come this summer.
Ed Soares told USA Today that Zingano could be ready to fight as early as June. Not only is she rehabbing a severely damage knee, but she’s also recovering from the terrible news that her husband Mauricio Zingano was found dead recently of an apparent suicide.
“She texted me last night right after the fight,” Soares said. “Cat watched the fight, and she’s focused, she’s motivated, her recovery is going well, and physically, she’s getting back. She’s had a rocky road since her surgery, especially with all the personal stuff that’s happened to her. But Cat is one of those people who can take the negative energy and use it as a motivator to go get that belt.”
Zingano vs. Rousey makes perfect sense since she destroyed former challenger Miesha Tate about a year ago. Despite the awful stoppage last weekend against McMann, Rousey remains undefeated—as does Zingano. Her high level Muay Thai seems like an interesting challenge for Ronda. Just ask Tate about those knees.
If and when it finally happens, there’s no doubt Ronda will reprise her villainous role for the fight. Zingano string of hard of hard luck will make her a heavy favorite in the eyes of the fans, if not the Vegas odds.
